BEVINS: Philly or KC? How to pick if you don’t really care

There are 32 teams in the NFL, but as we approach Super Bowl Sunday, only two are left standing. So even if you are a football fan, chances are, your team won’t be taking the field. Nevertheless, the Super Bowl remains a social event and you’ll probably be watching the game. Given that the commercials just don’t seem as exciting as they used to, wouldn’t it be more fun if you had a rooting interest in the game? This year, I don’t have any trouble choosing a side. The Philadelphia Eagles are divisional rivals of my favorite team, the Washington Whaddayacallems, and while I may ...

MYERS: WVU ends on a high note

Freshman running back Jaylen Anderson burst onto the scene in the final game of the 2022 season by breaking two third quarter touchdown runs of 54 and 57 yards within three minutes of playing time turning a deficit into an eventual upset of Oklahoma State 24-19. For much of the 2022 season the Mountaineers lacked explosive plays, but the two Anderson runs along with a Garrett Greene 36 yard TD scamper in the first half were the difference on a day when the Cowboys had more first downs, more total yards, and far fewer penalties. Greene left the game in the third quarter after a hard hit ...

Bulldogs bond via lock-in

WEST UNION — No bio sheets needed overnight for this Doddridge County girls basketball team. Between the four starters and two reserves who return this season from last year’s state quarterfinal appearance and the arrival of eight freshmen, Doddridge County girls basketball coach Lisa Cheeseman brought her players together for a team bonding activity as part of a lock-in at a local church. DCHS ranks as a small school in terms of classification, but two-hour practices and passing by one another in the hallway doesn’t guarantee team chemistry. A gathering such as a lock-in might ...

MYERS: One game left for WVU

It was a cold blustery day for Mountaineer fans in attendance at the last home game Saturday, but the temps seemed to drop even further as soon as opening kickoff occurred. Kansas State had a 14-0 lead eight plays into the game. The Mountaineers were able to respond by scoring on offense and quickly returning an interception for a touchdown to erase the lead, but any hope that WVU might settle into a competitive battle was quickly dashed as the Wildcats scored in just three plays to again take control. It was apparent West Virginia had no answers on defense, and with 13:28 remaining in ...

PATRICK: Parkersburg Catholic girls look to create their own path

PARKERSBURG — Regardless of the departures, there are no shoes to fill. As the Class AA defending state champions, the Parkersburg Catholic girls basketball team is about to embark on creating their own identity. Creating their own legacy. One full week into preseason practices, the ‘Crusaderette 10’ have pushed the reset button just like PCHS teams of the past which have combined for 10 state titles since the first team was established 50 years ago. The formula works. “As special as last year’s team was, it wasn’t just about a one and done deal,” Marty Vierheller, who ...

MYERS: WVU showed fight

Oklahoma had just taken a 10-0 lead with just over a minute remaining in the first half on Saturday. The West Virginia defense had played well, but the deficit looked larger than the score as the Mountaineer offense had been totally incapable of putting anything together. Head Coach Neal Brown tends to be loyal to his starting quarterbacks but after six quarters of impotent offense over two Saturdays he made the change to backup Garrett Greene. Greene added mobility that was missing with JT Daniels. The difference was immediately apparent as Greene escaped for a 33 yard run and scored a ...
