Red Sox stretch win streak to 13 games

BOSTON (AP) -- Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer, Sonny Gray gave up one run and five hits over six innings, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-1 on Sunday for their 13th win in a row.
The streak is tied for the second-best in franchise history with a 13-game run in July 1948. The franchise鈥檚 longest was 15 games in June 1946.
Gray (12-1) struck out five and issued four walks in his ninth consecutive quality start. He has not allowed more than three runs since April 14.
After Victor Mesa Jr. hit an inside-the-park homer in the second inning to give the Rays a 1-0 lead, Andruw Monasterio tied it in the bottom half with an RBI double.
Boston scored three more in the third without a hit. Jahmai Jones came home on a passed ball and Wilyer Abreu scored on a fielder鈥檚 choice. Junior Caminero鈥檚 throw struck Abreu in the back as he slid into home, allowing all runners to advance safely.
Contreras scored from third on Romy Gonzalez鈥檚 ground out to make it 4-1.
Contreras swung on the first pitch he saw in the fifth for a two-run, 414-foot homer to the triangle in Fenway鈥檚 center field.
Rays starter Shane McClanahan (8-6) allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked three.
DODGERS 8, YANKEES 2
NEW YORK (AP) -- Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched a four-hitter for his first regular-season complete game in 66 major league starts, and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees 8-2 in the opener of their day-night doubleheader Sunday.
Shohei Ohtani hit an RBI double in the third inning and an RBI single in the eighth, when the Dodgers sent 11 batters to the plate and broke it open with five runs charged to Yankees reliever Jake Bird.
Teoscar Hern谩ndez had an RBI double, Tommy Edman delivered a two-run single and Freddie Freeman added a sacrifice fly to go with his RBI single that knocked in Ohtani with two outs in the third.
Edman scored three times from the No. 9 spot in the batting order. Andy Pages blooped an RBI double that chased Cam Schlittler (9-6) with one out in the fifth.
After a rainout Saturday night, Yamamoto (10-6) easily outpitched Schlittler in a marquee matchup of All-Stars. The 2025 World Series MVP struck out seven and walked none, throwing 69 of his 102 pitches for strikes.
The right-hander tossed two complete games in the postseason last year, a three-hitter against Milwaukee in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series and a four-hitter against Toronto in Game 2 of the World Series.
Yamamoto retired his first nine batters on 28 pitches before Trent Grisham homered into the second deck in right field on a 2-0 fastball leading off the fourth.
Anthony Volpe had an RBI single in the eighth after Jazz Chisholm Jr. was gifted a leadoff double when Pages lost his flyball to center in the sun.
New York also lost two popups in the sun that dropped untouched.
WHITE SOX 3, BLUE JAYS 0
TORONTO (AP) -- Sean Burke and two relievers combined on a four-hitter, Colson Montgomery hit his 24th home run and the Chicago White Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 on Sunday.
Braden Montgomery had two hits and an RBI as the White Sox bounced back from Saturday鈥檚 1-0 loss to take two of three from the Blue Jays. Toronto scored five total runs in the series.
Chicago won five of six against Toronto this season, outscoring the Blue Jays 29-12.
Burke (7-4) allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings, improving to 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA over his past six appearances. He walked one and struck out five.
Bryan Hudson got four outs and Grant Taylor finished for his fifth save in eight chances.
Toronto had two hits through eight innings before Ernie Clement reached on an infield hit to start the ninth. Nathan Lukes followed with a bunt single, and Clement moved to third on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.鈥檚 liner to right. Taylor ended it by getting Kazuma Okamoto to ground into a double play.
Bryan Hudson replaced Burke after Daulton Varsho鈥檚 two-out single in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Alejandro Kirk grounded out on Hudson鈥檚 first pitch.
Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage (4-5) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. He walked two and matched his career high by striking out nine.
Chicago opened the scoring on Andrew Benintendi鈥檚 sacrifice fly in the fourth, then added a pair of two-out runs in the sixth.
Colson Montgomery fell behind 0-2 against Yesavage before hitting a 388-foot homer. Benintendi followed with a double and scored on Braden Montgomery鈥檚 single.
BRAVES 8, RANGERS 5
ATLANTA (AP) -- Austin Riley and Drake Baldwin each hit two home runs and the Atlanta Braves beat the Texas Rangers 8-5 on Sunday to win the three-game series in a matchup of first-place teams.
Baldwin had a career-high five hits and became the first Braves catcher to hit two homers in a game since Johnny Estrada on May 15, 2004. Riley had three hits and drove in four runs.
The NL East-leading Braves took two of three from the AL West-leading Rangers. The Braves claimed their 21st series of the season, matching their total from 2025.
Wyatt Langford had three hits for Texas, including a homer in the ninth off Braves closer Raisel Iglesias.
Riley, who entered the All-Star break hitting only .207 with nine homers, had three homers in the series. He raised his average to .217 with the three hits, including a two-run single in the seventh. He also went deep in the Braves鈥� 15-1 win in the series opener Friday night.
Riley homered in each of his first two at-bats against Nathan Eovaldi (9-8). Eovaldi, who allowed four runs in four innings, has given up 22 homers this season, the third-highest total in his 15 seasons in the majors. He allowed 23 homers in 2016 and 2024.
Grant Holmes (6-4) allowed three runs in five innings. The Braves led 4-0 before Texas scored three runs in the fifth. Langford had a run-scoring double in the inning.
METS 6, PHILLIES 1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Nolan McLean struck out 10 and allowed just two hits in six scoreless innings, Francisco Lindor homered and drove in three runs and the New York Mets won a series in Philadelphia for the first time in nearly four years, beating the Phillies 6-1 on Sunday.
Juan Soto, Luis Torrens and Carson Benge also had RBIs for the Mets. Lindor reached base five times, adding a single, double and a pair of walks to his sixth homer of the season.
Alec Bohm hit his 12th homer of the season for Philadelphia.
McLean (7-6) continued his strong rookie season with the third double-digit strikeout performance of his career. He allowed only Bohm鈥檚 single in the second inning and a double by Trea Turner in the sixth. The 24-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.34.
New York had not won a series in their last seven tries in Philadelphia, dating to a four-game series in August 2022. The high-priced Mets finished a forgettable first half with the fourth-worst record in baseball before taking two of three from the Phillies. New York opened Sunday 16 games behind Atlanta in the NL East and 11 back of a wild-card spot.
The Mets battered Alan Rangel (0-3), who gave up five runs on seven hits in four innings. Rangel was making his third start after the spot was vacated by struggling prospect Andrew Painter, who was demoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley last month.
Lindor鈥檚 two-run shot to the second deck in right field put New York up 2-0. The Mets tacked on three runs in the second, on Torrens鈥� RBI double, Lindor鈥檚 run-scoring single and Benge鈥檚 sacrifice fly.
The Phillies dropped to 14-31 in games not started by Zack Wheeler, Cristopher S谩nchez, or Jes煤s Luzardo. They are 41-14 in contests pitched by those three.
BREWERS 3, MARLINS 1
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- William Contreras hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off closer Pete Fairbanks to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
Fairbanks (3-4) was trying to protect a one-run lead, and instead ended up with his third blown save that extended Miami鈥檚 losing streak to a season-high six games.
In the last of the ninth, Jackson Chourio singled. Brice Turang walked. With one out, Contreras, who pinch hit for Jake Bauers in the seventh, connected on a 1-2 pitch for his 10th home run of the season and second career walk-off homer.
Contreras鈥� game-winning hit spoiled a solid start by Eury P茅rez, who allowed one hit in six scoreless innings.
Esteury Ruiz homered in the third and P茅rez, Cade Gibson and Michael Peterson made it stand until the ninth.
P茅rez dominated with a combination of four-seam fastballs, sinkers, sliders and changeups and escaped a jam in the sixth.
P茅rez walked Christian Yelich, hit Chourio and then threw wildly to second for an error as both runners advanced. He tied his season high with nine strikeouts, including getting Brice Turang with a 100.8-mph four seamer. Then, with the infield drawn in, Andrew Vaughn lined into a double play on a 100.6 mph sinker.
Vaughn had the only hit when he laced a 103 mph pitch off the glove of third baseman Leo Jim茅nez in the fourth.
Heriberto Hern谩ndez had two hits and extended his Marlins-leading on-base streak to 12 games.
Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez missed the game with a sore right ring finger.
The Marlins recalled INF Graham Pauley from Triple-A Jacksonville and optioned outfielder Rece Hinds to its top affiliate.
ORIOLES 5, ASTROS 2
HOUSTON (AP) -- Brandon Young allowed one run over seven innings, Coby Mayo homered, and the Baltimore Orioles extended their season-best winning streak to seven games by beating the Houston Astros 5-2 on Sunday.
The streak is the Orioles鈥� longest since 2023.
Young (8-2) allowed five hits and one walk while striking out seven, which is one less than his season high. Yordan Alvarez鈥檚 third-inning RBI double accounted for the only run he allowed.
With Young out of the game, Rico Garcia allowed a solo home run to Jose Altuve in the eighth inning. Grant Wolfram pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first major league save.
Gunnar Henderson gave Baltimore the lead with a third-inning RBI single. He made it 2-0 later in the frame when he stole home on a double steal.
The Orioles finished with a season-high four stolen bases.
Leody Taveras increased Baltimore鈥檚 lead to 4-1 with a broken bat, two-run single in the fifth inning.
Mayo added his solo homer in the sixth.
Dylan Beavers was 2 for 4 with a double.
Orioles鈥� catcher Samuel Basallo left the game in the second inning due to right shoulder discomfort.
Houston starter Hunter Brown (1-1) allowed four runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings. He issued a career-high six walks and hit two batters.
Astros pitching combined for seven walks and four hit batters.
Houston has lost four straight games and seven of its last nine.
