Pirates fall to Arizona in series finale

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Eduardo Rodr铆guez pitched eight shutout innings, Gabriel Moreno hit a two-run homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Wednesday, clinching the three-game series.
Arizona (57-52) now sits two games up on the Pirates (55-54) for the final NL wild card.
Rodr铆guez (10-3) struck out two while giving up five hits on 105 pitches before Brandyn Garcia closed out a hitless ninth inning for his second save of the year.
The loss marked the fifth straight against a left-handed opener for Pittsburgh, while Diamondbacks starters gave up zero earned runs in 20 2/3 innings pitched this series.
Moreno scored the game鈥檚 first runs, smashing a slider 407 feet into the lawn past the center-field wall. With the hit, he extended his on-base streak to 26 consecutive games.
Max Kepler drove in the only other score with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Despite three consecutive three-up, three-down innings to start the game, Jared Jones (2-2) surrendered all three runs and struck out five in six innings for the Pirates.
The Pirates have been shut out in three of their last seven games. They lost 2-0 to the Yankees a week ago and 11-0 to the Cubs on Saturday.
Up next: Diamondbacks LHP Mitch Bratt (0-1, 6.32 ERA) takes the mound for Game 1 of a weekend series at the Cleveland Guardians on Friday. Pirates begin a four-game series at the Cincinnati Reds today.
MARLINS 8, PHILLIES 6
MIAMI (AP) -- Griffin Conine hit a go-ahead pinch-hit homer in the eighth, Otto Lopez, Heriberto Hern谩ndez and Xavier Edwards each had two RBIs, and the Miami Marlins rallied to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-6 on Wednesday.
The Marlins overcame a 6-0 deficit to mark their largest comeback of the season. They had previously rallied from four runs down on May 9 against the Nationals, and have come back 21 times this year.
Lopez got the Marlins on the board in the fifth, grounding out but driving in Esteury Ruiz to make it 6-1. Hern谩ndez then sent a high changeup from Jes煤s Luzardo 416 feet to left-center to get the Fightin鈥� Fish within three.
Lopez drove in another with a single in the seventh and Edwards drove in two more with a single of his own to tie the game at 6-all.
Kyle Stowers drew a walk to start the eighth and Conine was sent in to pinch-hit for Brian Navvareto. He connected on a middle-middle changeup and launched a 424-foot blast to center. It was a homer in 29 of 30 MLB ballparks, per Statcast.
Conine also had a go-ahead pinch-hit homer on June 29 against the Rockies.
Marlins starter Ryan Gusto worked five innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. Tyler Zuber (1-1) took the win in relief, and Pete Fairbanks earned his 15th save.
Jonathan Bowlan (2-1) took the loss for Philadelphia, and Seth Johnson had a blown save. Luzardo went 6 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and ending his six-game streak of one or fewer runs allowed.
Trea Turner homered and Bryce Harper tripled for the Phillies.
BLUE JAYS 5, NATIONALS 2
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Trey Yesavage allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings, Kazuma Okamoto went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Washington Nationals 5-2 on Wednesday.
The Blue Jays improved to 13-18-4 in series play and completed their six-game road trip at 3-3.
Yesavage (5-5) struck out four and walked three. The 23-year-old rookie worked his third quality start in his past five games and lowered his ERA to 3.73.
The Nats got on the board first thanks to Jacob Young鈥檚 RBI double in the fourth.
Ernie Clement hit an RBI double in the sixth to drive in George Springer, and Daulton Varsho singled to bring Okamoto across in the seventh.
Okamoto added insurance with a two-run double in the eighth, and Springer tacked on one more with a single.
Washington threatened to take the lead after loading the bases with one out in the eighth, but Louis Varland entered and worked out of the jam with a groundout, strikeout and flyout.
Varland also threw a scoreless ninth for his 23rd save.
For the Nats, James Wood was 2-for-3, and Luis Garc铆a Jr. drove in a run in the eighth. Starter Luke Littell worked 4 2/3 innings and surrendered four hits while striking out two. Orlando Ribalta (0-2) took the loss in relief.
METS 3, BRAVES 2
NEW YORK (AP) -- Carson Benge hit a tie-breaking RBI double in the seventh inning Wednesday, lifting the New York Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the opener of a doubleheader.
Francisco Alvarez (double) and A.J. Ewing (sacrifice fly) had RBIs in the sixth for the Mets, who won their third straight game -- their longest winning streak since a four-game run from May 27-31.
Ewing had two stolen bases. It was the second two-steal game of the season for Ewing, who is the first Mets rookie with multiple two-steal games since Darryl Strawberry in 1983.
Huascar Brazob谩n (5-2) threw a perfect seventh and Luke Weaver got Matt Olson to hit into an inning-ending double play in the eighth before Devin Williams tossed a one-hit ninth for his 15th save of the season. Pinch-runner Jorge Mateo stole second with two outs, after which Williams struck out Austin Riley.
Matt Olson delivered a 402-foot, two-run homer in the sixth for the Braves, who got two hits each from Drake Baldwin and Eli White.
Dylan Dodd (2-1) took the loss.
Mets left-hander Sean Manaea surrendered two runs and struck out four in six innings. He has given up three runs or fewer eight times in nine starts since moving back into the rotation.
Braves right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver allowed two runs and whiffed four in 4 1/3 innings in his return from Tommy John surgery. Smith-Shawver鈥檚 start was his first in the majors since May 29, 2025.
ORIOLES 10, TIGERS 9
DETROIT (AP) -- Colton Cowser hit a tiebreaking single in the 12th inning, capping the Baltimore Orioles鈥� rally from a seven-run deficit to beat the Tigers 10-9 on Wednesday and spoil Tarik Skubal鈥檚 possible farewell to Detroit.
Fans gave Skubal, a hot target ahead of Monday鈥檚 trade deadline, several standing ovations while he took a shutout into the seventh inning, but Baltimore pounced on the Tigers鈥� bullpen. The O鈥檚 trailed 7-0 after six innings and had been outscored 21-0 in the last 15 innings, but they scored five times in the seventh and twice in the eighth.
Baltimore scored twice in the 11th, but Detroit鈥檚 Spencer Torkelson answered with a two-run homer -- the 100th of his career -- on the first pitch of the bottom of the inning.
Cowser鈥檚 two-out grounder up the middle put Baltimore up 10-9 in the 12th, and Grant Wolfram (4-2) got the first two outs in the bottom of the inning.
Andrew Kittredge came in with runners on second and third and retired Eduardo Valencia for his fourth save.
Skubal was one out away from walking off the mound with seven scoreless innings, but his day ended instead on a two-out RBI single by Leody Taveras.
With Skubal in the clubhouse, Baltimore turned one run into five.
Reliever Kyle Finnegan walked Jeremiah Jackson to load the bases, and pinch-hitter Jackson Holliday hit a two-run single to center. After Holliday stole second, Taylor Ward dribbled a two-run single past Torkelson at first, cutting the Tigers lead to 7-5.
Skubal was charged with three runs, with six strikeouts and a walk.
Coby Mayo鈥檚 two-run triple tied it with one out in the eighth, but Drew Anderson struck out the next two batters to prevent Baltimore from going ahead.
