It's hard to believe another prep sports season is in the books.
It was a great run by the Williamstown baseball team trying to make school history in the most ultimate fashion.
Although the Yellowjackets of head coach Levi Maxwell were doubled up 6-3 by Charleston Catholic in the Class A state championship game and had to settle for a runner-up finish, it was the first time Williamstown ever garnered team hardware.
Suffice it to say the graduation loss of Maxwell Molessa and his fellow seniors might be impossible to replace, but I know guys like Ty Ott and Parker Schramm will have endless fuel to burn to chase their desires of the ultimate prize.
Speaking of the ultimate prize, things are quite busy at the moment when it comes to area hall of fames.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame is having its induction banquet on Saturday evening at the Grand Pointe Conference & Reception Center in Vienna.
Last year's 25th induction banquet was the first one I can recall attending in quite some time, but it was indeed an honor just to be around so much greatness.
That's going to be the case again on Saturday with the current crop being inducted and it's another really good one.
Perhaps it's just because he's short, but ever since I started in the business I've always had a liking for Ravenswood coach Bryan Canterbury, who will be joined as a lifetime achiever by Fred Sauro.
I was walking out of GoMart Ballpark on Saturday after the Yellowjackets' tough setback, was about to cross the road and I see a window roll down. It was Scott Sauro and father Fred in the passenger seat heading back home from the game. It's always fun to have a quick bit of small talk and see a smile on Sauro's face.
One of the best in the business and another guy that's just always been a good dude to me is Ritchie County softball coach Dave Mossor.
To a degree, Mossor and fellow inductee Rod O'Donnell of Parkersburg High are built in the same fashion 鈥� old school tough and do it right the first time type of guys.
The trio of players being inducted are St. Marys' Michael Cox, Marietta's Megan McAuley and Parkersburg's Tim Phillips, all of whom are more than deserving.
The same can be said for local longtime and now "retired" sportscaster Jim Wharton, who will be enshrined alongside coaches Dugan Hill of Caldwell and Wirt County's Janet Frazier 鈥� affectionately known as Mrs. November for her Tigers' success on the volleyball court.
Speaking of Frazier, who used to take piano lessons from my mother in the days of yesteryear, she's going to soon have company in the Wirt County Sports Hall of Fame.
Frazier was one of a dozen inductees in 2023 for the inaugural class and the Wirt County Sports Hall of Fame is currently still seeking nominations until Friday, June 28.
Six inductees will be included for the 2024 class, but the criteria used for the first class requiring the nominees to be a native Wirt Countian no longer applies.
All 2024 nominees will be on a three-year automatic carryover list before they would need to be renominated to be eligible for voting consideration by the committee.
Anyone wishing to nominate a former player, coach or someone who served the community should send their name, their phone number, the nominees name, phone number and email, the nominees graduation year (note if not Wirt County) and reasons why they should be considered via email to myboonelane@yahoo.com
