There is always one game on the schedule against an FCS opponent which afford Mountaineer football fans a relaxing afternoon and enable players who normally don’t see game action to get playing time. Saturday was no exception as West Virginia easily dispatched Towson State 65-7. The offense piled up 624 total yards, almost evenly balanced between running and passing. WVU Mountaineer fans traveled to the home opener with cautious optimism after a close loss the previous week at Pittsburgh. They left in a sour, despondent mood after a 55-42 overtime loss to what was previously the weakest team in the Big 12 Conference. The return of the Pitt-West Virginia rivalry before a record Pittsburgh sports crowd was certainly one of the classics in the long history of the series. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the evening, but unfortunately the Panthers made one more play on an interception touchdown return of 56 yards with 2:58 remaining to secure the 38-31 win.
