The Crochet Lady: You won’t lose your way with this easy bookmark project

Hello, my crochet friends. Maurita the Crochet Lady here. The library summer reading programs have inspired my latest project for you to enjoy ... a mouse bookmarker. I made my example with worsted weight yarn and H size hook, but it can be made with crochet cotton size 10 and steel hook size 7 (1.5mm) to use in more expensive books.

STITCHES: CH= chain. SL ST= slip stitch. SC= single crochet. DC= double crochet. CLUSTER= 5DC in same stitch.

NOTES: The chain is started at the tip of the tail, the head is started, then the body spiral, tail, then tassel at the end. The ears and face are added after and this is where you can turn it into a different creature... plus legs can be added. As you work the body clusters, the next base chain will tighten (you will see this in my video), try to not skip chains so the body will be full length.

BASE CHAIN: CH30, place yarn scrap as stitch marker in current stitch, CH16.

HEAD: 5SC in 2nd chain from hook.

BODY: Note: First cluster is worked into first SC of head AND next base chain. CLUSTER in each base chain until stitch with marker in it.

TAIL: SC in each stitch until last stitch of the base chain, SL ST. Fasten off making sure to leave end for making tassel.

TASSAL: Cut a few lengths of yarn approx. 6 inches long (around 8 or 10 should be full enough). Use the two yarn ends of the project to tie to middle of cut yarn pieces to create the tassel. Trim yarn ends if needed.

EARS: on edge of head stitches, find middle, then move right one stitch, SL ST, CH1, 3DC in same St, CH1, SL ST in same ST. Fasten off. Repeat on other side of middle head SC.

FACE: sew on eyes and nose.
