Welcome back, my lovely crafty artists. I'm Maurita the Crochet Lady. I was thinking everyone might enjoy learning how to make a simple stuffed animal plushie.

The newest term is "Amigurumi"鈥� Japanese for knit or crochet stuffed toy. Most of them are made using single crochet stitches in a continuous spiral instead of individual rounds. Increase and decreases change the shape so it is not just a solid ball. Most people do not 'line' their projects like you would a purse, so the crochet stitches need to be tight so the stuffing doesn't come out.

Arms, legs, ears, tails, etc. can be added to complete your creation. Some pieces are crocheted onto the plush while others may be sewn on. Often when designing my projects, I start with the eyes because I prefer crocheting them instead of using felt or plastic eyes. For detailed eyes, I use a small hook and small thread like "crochet cotton."

This time, I chose a project for the upcoming holiday season 鈥� Elves. I'm excited that they can be crocheted in any color to use throughout the year. Before you start crocheting the pattern, I have included some notes and stitch directions.

NOTES:

* 1-Rounds will merge because they are crocheted in a spiral, so place a stitch marker on loop on hook at beginning of each round. 2-Pieces sewn on: eyes, feet, arms, mouth. 3-Crocheted in place: nose and ears. Sizes: Sm- worsted yarn- H hook, Med- double strand worsted yarn- J hook, Lg- Blanket yarn- hook N or P hook. 4-Place 'spiral' seam under ear and arm or on backside. 5-Any color change can be used, but I'm including directions for a smoother transition.

* Single crochet (sc)= insert hook into stitch-or-space, yarn over, draw through loop

* Sc inc= 2sc in same stitch

* inv-sc-dec= insert hook under only front strand of next 2sts, complete normal sc.

* Sc-half-color-change= the loop on hook will be old color, insert hook, draw up loop in old color, yarn over with new color to complete sc.

* Sc-half-color Round= complete last stitch of previous 'spiraled' round with new color, crochet entire round with sc-half-color.

* 6dc-cluster= 6dc-dec all in 1stitch.

ELF AMIGURUMI:

* EYE: Rnd1: ch2, 6sc in 1st chain, join. Fasten off leaving tail for sewing.

* FOOT: Rnd1: same as eyes, don't join. Rnd2-7: sc in each st. Fasten off leaving tail for sewing.

* ARM: In shirt color, work Rnd1-5 of FOOT.

* BODY: Starting at bottom:

* Rnd1: pants color: ch2, 6sc in 1st ch (ignore beg-ch). Rnd2: Remember stitch marker, sc inc in each sc (12sc). Rnd3: [sc, sc inc] around (18sc). Rnd4: [2sc, sc inc] around (24sc total). Rnd5: sc-half-color-round: switch to shirt color. Rnd6: sc around. Rnd7: sc-half-color-round: switch to skin color. Rnd8-9: sc around. Rnd10: 6sc, NOSE= 6dc-cluster, sc around. Rnd11-12: sc around. Rnd13: [2sc, inv-sc-dec] around. Sew on feet, arms, eyes, & mouth. STUFF PLUSHIE. Rnd14: [sc,inv-sc-dec] around.

* HAT: Rnd15: sc-half-color-change to pants color, sc around. Rnd16-17: sc around. Rnd18: [sc, sc dec] around. Rnd19-23: sc around (8sc). Rnd24: sc dec around. Fasten off. Note: I chose to sew tip of hat to Elf.

* BRIM OF HAT: with shirt color, sc inc over Rnd13 skin colored sc. Join. Fasten off.

* EAR: on seam above arm: (turn work each row): Row1-3: 5sc. Row4: sc, sc dec, 2sc. Row5: 4sc. Row6: sc, sc dec, sc. Row7: 3sc. Row8: sc, sc dec. Row9: 2sc.

SEW TO HIDE ALL YARN TAILS.
