Parkersburg has many problems and a lack of housing is one of them. 41,000 left West Virginia 2022. We consistently lose population but still have a housing shortage. Perhaps we should try some new approaches. Kudos to council for allowing modulars on city lots now.
I wish we would save houses before destroying them. Why not allow interested people six months to rehab a house? If it's livable after the trial period give them a deed.
Why not consider boarding houses?
Why not have a park free week or month to see if that encourages downtown traffic?
Why don't we consider tax money our own and spend accordingly? Because it is our money.
The city spent over $800,000 to tear down a motel on 7th Street and relocate the owners. Then the city sold it for $200,000 for a loss of $600,000. One goal was to eliminate the homeless people in the area. This strategy didn't solve or improve the problem. Perhaps remodeling the motel for a boarding house would have come closer to addressing the problem.
Sometimes new ideas will surface if you listen to those who are still here. We can do better.
