Letter to the Editor: No one is coming for your air conditioner

By now I should know better but I'm continually alarmed by the misinformation people blindly accept and then proclaim loudly as fact.
Case in point, the letter to the editor on the Aug. 13, titled "Leaders don't understand citizens" should instead read "Some citizens don't understand leaders." The author claims that proposed new A/C efficiency standards would force him to "go out and get a new A/C unit."
This is a sensationalistic and totally inaccurate interpretation being spewed by certain radical media outlets to agitate their followers. In fact, these standards would be similar to those currently in place for cars, lighting, kitchen appliances and 鈥� A/C systems. The government doesn't confiscate your Caprice Classic because it doesn't meet updated CAFE standards. Same with A/C units.
Estimates are that the new standards would save consumers a total of about $1.5 billion per year on their electricity bills and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 106 million metric tons over 30 years -- the equivalent of the annual emissions of 13.4 million homes.
The cost? They are expected to cost manufacturers a total of about $82.1 million one time to comply. A rounding error in the total revenues of the massive HVAC industry.
Don't like more energy efficiency? Keep your old A/C unit and your Caprice Classic without concern Biden will knock on your door to take them.
