* During last week's events for the 100th anniversary of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Veritas Classical Academy student Aadkya Adhikari made it through the first two preliminary rounds -- ranking 100 out of 243 spellers before being among those who did not advance after taking a 40-question test that included spelling and vocabulary questions. She continues to aim high, saying her goal for next year is to make it to the semifinals at the national level. As a fourth grader this year, she'll have four more chances to work toward that goal -- a path that begins with the Marietta Times Regional Spelling Bee in March. Should she make it to the stage here again, she will be among a few dozen other students competing and aiming high as well. But it is fantastic to hear that as a 9-year-old she is doing big things and has big goals. Congratulations, on your performance in Washington, D.C.!
* As local businesses, groups and families gathered for the 2025 Wood County Relay for Life, Grand Marshal Paul Huffman was reflecting on early diagnosis and quality medical care. "If your doctor thinks there is any indication, follow on it as soon as possible. The sooner something is done the better the outcome," he said. In fact, Huffman says his own cancer was caught early enough that only surgery was required. It's important to remember, as we honor patients, survivors and caregivers -- and remember those who have been lost -- that Relay for Life is also about awareness, and encouraging screenings and early diagnosis. The funds raised at events such as Relay for Life are used toward research not just for cures and treatment, but for better screening, too. We are grateful to those who organize our local events. But we must remember, the fight goes on.
