* Washington County 4-H is already a stand-out organization to those of us in the region who know it. But earlier this month, it received recognition at the state level, during the Ohio 4-H Conference. Jeremy Barth of Fleming received the Ohio 4-H Alumni Award -- he's been a member of three different 4-H clubs, has been a 4-H volunteer for 25 years and is the Washington County club's advisor and chairman of the 4-H Endowment Committee. Meanwhile, the Washington County Carteens 4-H Club received the Ohio 4-H Innovator Award for its work to reduce the number of fatal car crashes in Washington County. 4-H says its aim is to see "that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us." That's certainly visible here, as these young people, and the adults who work with them, are at work every day in our communities. Congratulations!
* Williamstown Elementary School second-graders were recognized last week for their hard work to improve their reading skills -- moving into the top ten for i-Ready reading growth in the county. I-Ready is an online program teachers can use to help assess student needs, monitor progress and personalize learning to achieve best results. It is being put to good use, it seems. Students in Michelle Elliot's, Diane Hickey's, Melissa Dean's and Heather Burrell's classrooms were from Wood County Schools Superintendent Christie Willis, who presented them with certificates to mark the achievement. Way to go, students!
