* Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg is racking up the accolades, as it was recently named by its parent organization for its youth advocacy efforts and is considered a Hero for Youth. "Advocacy is an incredibly crucial part of our mission to serve youth and help families live, work and thrive in the Mid-Ohio Valley," Boys and Girls Clubs of Parkersburg CEO Lynn Reins said. "I am so proud of the efforts of our leadership and staff who advocate for Club kids at any given opportunity. It is through these important conversations that we can positively impact the futures of local youth." The local organization has gotten very good at those conversations, and Reins is right to be proud. Particularly at the start of another legislative session in West Virginia the club's work is as important as ever. "Our hope is that these meaningful conversations help policy makers recognize the importance of Boys and Girls Clubs and realize how crucial it is to promote a positive future for youth," Reins said. We share in her hope lawmakers will prioritize our young people's future this year.
* Each year, Scouts from across our region participate in the Kootaga District Pinewood Derby. This year's event was held Feb. 9 at West Virginia University at Parkersburg. It is a fun opportunity for kids to compete using their engineering and building skills to creatively construct a car that will beat all the others. "They get to figure out how to make it faster, and tweak their design," said Alan Campbell, scoutmaster for Scouting America Troop 20. "In the end, you know, they're placing their cars up there on the track and competing against other scouts. So it's just a fantastic event." Indeed it is. Well done, to those who pulled off yet another great day for local Scouts.
