* The Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg continues to increase access to its facility with an expansion of transportation routes for the 2024-25 school year. Starting this school year, Vienna, Neale, Blennerhassett and Parkersburg Catholic elementary schools were added to the transportation route, along with Parkersburg Catholic High School. The Club and Wood County Schools will also continue to provide transportation from Criss, Madison, Fairplains, Martin, Kanawha, Emerson, Jefferson, Gihon and Franklin elementary schools; Edison, Hamilton and Van Devender middle schools; and Parkersburg South and Parkersburg high schools. This expansion is in addition to the news of a planned site at Mineral Wells Elementary School. "(We want to) be able to impact their futures with our programming and offerings we have here like our games room, gym, pool and different programs we have that contribute to good character development and leadership," said Darlene Parsons, Boys & Girls Clubs Mary Street unit director. The expansion of that kind of impact is good news, indeed.
* As the new school year gets under way, we know our schools will once again be filling needs that are more than just academic for some students. That is why it is so encouraging to know there are groups such as the members of Parkersburg South High School's Class of 1974, which celebrated its 50th class reunion in part by donating more than $2,800 to the PSHS food pantry. "We will put it to good use," Principal Maria Francisco said. No doubt they will, but they and other schools across the Mid-Ohio Valley will need continued support to help meet the needs of students that go beyond the classroom. Kudos to the Class of '74 for stepping up.
