Education: Madison Elementary School has reason to be proud

Teachers, administrators and students at Madison Elementary School started the school year on a high note, with the celebration of the school's certification as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School by FranklinCovey Education.
Such an achievement requires meeting a long list of standards set by FranklinCovey, just a couple of which are: "The school community is able to see leadership in the physical environment, hear leadership through a common language, and feel leadership through a culture of caring, relationships, and affirmation," and "Schoolwide, classroom, family, and community leadership events provide authentic environments to celebrate leadership, build culture, and allow students to practice leadership skills."
And, yes, there is a process for measuring the school's progress toward achieving those goals.
Principal Valissa Porter is right to understand this is a demonstration of the impact the school is having not just on staff, students and parents, but the community as a whole.
"We are honored to have been certified as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. We have seen amazing results from implementing the Leader in Me model at our school over the last nine years," Porter said. "Our former and current staff, students, and parents have all worked together to help us achieve this school goal. We have seen so much growth in our students through their school leadership roles and our amazing school culture, and we expect to see even greater results over time."
What a wonderful prospect.
Certainly, recognition for their efforts is nice. And there will be recognition at tonight's Wood County Schools Board of Education meeting.
But the greater reward will be watching the young people nurtured in such an environment go on to do great things for our communities -- perhaps our state or even country. Congratulations, to those who are making it happen.
