Tree collapses onto apartment in Williamstown

WILLIAMSTOWN 鈥� A large tree fell and caused the collapse of an apartment building on West Fourth-and-a-Half Street near Highland Avenue in Williamstown Sunday evening.

There were reportedly multiple trees down as a result of the storm Sunday night, with calls made to local law enforcement around 6:30 p.m., according to Williamstown Mayor and Williamstown Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Paul Jordan.

"We had a good size storm in the area 鈥� a large tree fell down onto an apartment complex and it's still being removed," Jordan said Monday afternoon.

Jordan said there were disruptions with the power lines locally but those were promptly tended to as a result of the response from all emergency personnel units in the area.

"The building collapsed and the folks have been displaced 鈥� there were no injuries," he said. "We made sure everyone was accounted for and all city crews came out to help."

Jordan said there were police, fire, and emergency responders at the scene shortly after the event occurred.

"It was all hands on deck," he said.

The debris from the incidents were expected to be cleared Monday afternoon.

A dispatcher with the Wood County 911 Center said there were trees down near Emerson Avenue and St. Marys Pike as well as near Valley Mills Road and Emerson Avenue.

There were no power lines or structures involved in those incidents according to the dispatcher.

Emergency personnel with Washington County were contacted regarding any storm-related incidents in the area but there was no response by print deadline Monday.
