Suspect wounded, Wood County Sheriff鈥檚 detective hurt during arrest

PARKERSBURG -- A suspect was shot and a sheriff's detective injured during an arrest Tuesday evening.
The Wood County Sheriff's Office announced on its Facebook page Wednesday that Kyle Scott Drake, no age listed, of 3858 Shelving Rock, Elizabeth, had been charged with attempted first-degree murder as a result of the incident. He is being treated for a gunshot wound to the arm, and will be arraigned after he is released, the post said.
Sheriff's Detective Nathan Forshey was treated at WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center and released Tuesday night after being struck by the driver's side mirror of the suspect's vehicle, it said.
The incident happened around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 9700 Slate Creek Road in Rockport, Sheriff Rick Woodyard said.
According to the post, sheriff's detectives were conducting a surveillance operation "involving an impending extortion criminal offense." A vehicle arrived at a predetermined location to retrieve money being paid as part of the extortion demands.
After the money was retrieved, the post says, Forshey approached, identified himself as a law enforcement officer and ordered the suspect to exit his vehicle.
Instead, the suspect, later identified as Drake, placed the vehicle in gear and attempted to flee the area, the post said.
Forshey stepped to the side but was struck by the vehicle's mirror, "causing him to instinctively grab the mirror to avoid being run over," the post says. As he was dragged, he mounted the vehicle's running board while continuing to command the driver to stop.
After being dragged approximately 40 yards, Forshey fired a single shot and struck the suspect in the right arm above the elbow, the post says. The suspect stopped the vehicle shortly after and was taken into custody.
Per sheriff's department protocol, the Wood County Prosecutor's Office and the West Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting, while the sheriff's office launches its own parallel investigation into the department's use-of-force policy, the post says.
Forshey will be placed on light duty with the department until the conclusion of the investigations and he is cleared for full-duty status, the post says.
The post said further information on the shooting would come from the West Virginia State Police.
