CHARLESTON -- Two residents from the region are among the nine COVID-19 coronavirus deaths confirmed on Monday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department reported the deaths of a 67-year-old woman from Wirt County and a 70-year-old man from Roane County.
Also confirmed were the deaths of a 91-year-old woman from Lincoln County, a 66-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 96-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 90-year-old man from Putnam County, a 77-year-old man from Putnam County, a 94-year-old woman from Fayette County and a 74-year-old woman from Kanawha County.
The nine deaths raised the total number of dead from the virus in West Virginia to 7,730 people.
"People of all ages and backgrounds are at risk of severe disease from COVID-19," said Dr. Jeffrey H. Coben, interim department secretary. "The best way to protect yourself is to stay up-to-date with vaccines and boosters."
The state Monday also reported 1,351 active COVID-19 cases statewide, down from the 1,565 cases reported on Friday.
Current active cases per county (previous report) are: Calhoun 1 (2), Doddridge 5 (5), Gilmer 1 (3), Jackson 22 (20), Pleasants 2 (3), Ritchie 15 (17), Roane 13 (11), Tyler 9 (10), Wetzel 10 (11), Wirt 1 (1), Wood 41 (58).
Twenty-four counties are green, the lowest level on the County Alert System Map. Green counties in this region are Wood, Wirt, Pleasants, Wetzel, Calhoun and Gilmer.
All other counties in the state are yellow, second lowest.
Local yellow counties are Tyler, Ritchie, Jackson, Doddridge and Roane counties.
The state reported 319 people were in a hospital with 51 in an intensive care unit and 12 on a ventilator. Six pediatric cases were reported.
West Virginians 6 months and older are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination. All individuals 6 months and older should receive a primary series of vaccinations, the initial set of shots that teaches the body to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID-19. At this time, one Omicron booster shot (bivalent) is recommended for everyone 6 months and older who completed the primary series, and their most recent COVID-19 shot was at least two months ago.
