CHARLESTON -- Another nine people have died from the COVID-19 coronavirus including a 36-year-old woman in West Virginia where the death count exceeded 7,500 on Tuesday, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported.
The woman is from Berkeley County, the department said in its Tuesday morning pandemic update.
Other confirmed virus-related deaths were an 81-year-old woman from Morgan County, an 85-year-old man from Fayette County, an 84-year-old man from Jefferson County, a 77-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 79-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 73-year-old man from Fayette County, an 89-year-old man from Raleigh County and a 79-year-old woman from Wetzel County.
The death count since the pandemic started more than 30 months ago was 7,502 residents, the department said.
"It never gets easier to announce the lives lost to COVID-19," said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary. "Our hearts go out to their friends and loved ones. Let's work together to prevent future deaths by staying current on vaccines and boosters."
Active cases of the virus again dropped on Tuesday, from 802 cases on Monday to 773 on Tuesday. The department also reported 221 new positive cases have been received in the 24-hour period between Monday and Tuesday mornings.
Pleasants County remains the only gold county in the state on the County Alert System Map. Gold is mid-level on the ratings based on infection rates. Tyler County turned yellow, second lowest, in Tuesday's pandemic report.
Nine counties are yellow. The remainder of the 55 counties are green, the lowest level.
Active cases in local counties on Tuesday (Monday) were: Calhoun, 1 (0); Doddridge, 2 (2); Gilmer, 6 (4); Jackson, 8 (12); Pleasants, 11 (11); Ritchie, 4 (3); Roane, 5 (6); Tyler, 5 (2); Wetzel, 6 (2); Wirt, 1 (1); Wood, 35 (35).
Statewide hospitalizations were at 150 patients on Monday with 19 in an intensive care unit and six on ventilators. Three pediatric cases with one in an ICU were reported.
