CHARLESTON -- No deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus were reported in West Virginia in the 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, but hospitalizations jumped more than 30, the Department of Health and Human Resources said.
Total deaths remain at 7,069 since the pandemic started more than two years ago, the department reported in its Wednesday morning pandemic update.
Active cases statewide in West Virginia were at 2,040. The lowest number this year was 263 on April 4 while the highest was more than 21,700 in late January.
Current active cases in local counties on Wednesday (previous report) were: Calhoun 2 (2), Doddridge 3 (3), Gilmer 10 (9), Jackson 12 (20), Pleasants 10 (11), Ritchie 4 (3), Roane 12 (15), Tyler 5 (4), Wetzel 17 (25), Wirt 6 (6), Wood 76 (99).
Thirty-four counties are yellow, second lowest, on the County Alert System Map based on infection rates. All other counties are green, the lowest level of infection.
The department reported 251 hospitalizations of patients, up from 220 reported on Tuesday. The number of unvaccinated patients were at 126 on Wednesday.
Forth-two patients were reported in an intensive care unit, up from 29 on Tuesday. Seventeen ICU patients are unvaccinated.
Seven patients are on a ventilator, one of whom is unvaccinated.
Seven pediatric patients were reported with two in an ICU.
Twenty-five staff and 56 inmates were reported with the virus by the Division of Corrections. Fifteen inmates are at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County and one is at Parkersburg Community Corrections.
