CHARLESTON -- Active cases of COVID-19 were over 2,100 on Friday, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said.
The state reported 2,135 cases, up 211 from 1,924 on Thursday. The state also received 611 new cases of the virus since the Thursday update.
Current active cases in local counties (previous day) were: Calhoun 15 (14), Doddridge 5 (2), Gilmer 8 (9), Jackson 29 (21), Pleasants 6 (9), Ritchie 6 (5), Roane 27 (39), Tyler 5 (7), Wetzel 21 (23), Wirt 3 (3), and Wood 88 (79).
Thirty-one counties are now yellow on the County Alert System Map. In this region, Wood, Jackson, Ritchie and Calhoun are yellow. Gilmer, Wetzel, Tyler, Pleasants, Roane and Wirt are green.
Two deaths were reported in the 24-hour period between Thursday and Friday mornings, an 81-year-old man from Preston County and a 67-year-old woman from Raleigh County. The death toll since the pandemic started more than two years ago was 7,056 on Friday.
"It's important to remember that every number on our dashboard represents a person affected by COVID-19," said department Secretary Bill J. Crouch. "We express our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones as we continue to fight this pandemic."
Hospitalizations rose by four to 196 on Friday, 87 of those unvaccinated. Twenty-three people are in an intensive care unit, four unvaccinated, and six are on a ventilator, all unvaccinated.
One pediatric case was reported.
Cases in long-term care facilities, which are updated on Fridays, totale 263 staff and 356 residents. Twenty-six were at the Glenville Center in Gilmer County, four at the Mountain View Care Center in Jackson County and one at Stonerise in Parkersburg, six at the Willows in Parkersburg and 11 at Worthington in Parkersburg.
Twenty staff and 77 inmates were reported with the virus by the Division of Corrections. Five were at the North Central Regional Jail.
