CHARLESTON -- COVID-19 cases again slightly dropped in the 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said on Wednesday.
The department in its morning pandemic update reported 1,795 active cases statewide, a drop of 35 since Tuesday. The state also reported 440 new cases have been received since the Tuesday update.
While about 1,500 cases higher than several weeks ago, the pandemic high during the delta mutation surge was over 21,717 in January.
Active cases in Wood County were 21 on Wednesday, down one from Tuesday, according to the state statistics.
Current active cases in local counties as of Wednesday (previous day) were: Calhoun 1 (2), Doddridge 3 (3), Gilmer 2 (2), Jackson 13 (8), Pleasants 1 (1), Ritchie 14 (15), Roane 7 (7), Tyler 6 (5), Wetzel 5 (4) and Wirt 4 (2).
Twenty-three counties including Tyler and Ritchie were yellow Wednesday on the County Alert System Map. Yellow is the second lowest in alert status based on infection rates.
All out counties are green, lowest level.
Hospitalizations increased by 16 from Tuesday to Wednesday. Of the 149 patients in a hospital, 69 are unvaccinated.
Twenty-two patients are in an intensive care unit, eight unvaccinated, and 11 are on a ventilator, seven unvaccinated.
One pediatric case was reported.
Twenty-two staff and 20 inmate cases were reported by the Division of Corrections. Three inmate cases are at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County and two are at Parkersburg Community Relations.
Two more deaths were reported between Tuesday and Wednesday, raising the toll since the pandemic began to 6,905. The state confirmed the deaths of a 65-year-old man from Kanawha County and a 60-year-old man from Berkeley County.
Condolences were again expressed by department Secretary Bill J. Crouch.
"As this pandemic continues, it doesn't get any easier to report the deaths of our residents," Crouch said. "We offer our sincere condolences to these families."
