CHARLESTON -- Active cases of the COVID-19 virus dropped over 130 between Monday and Tuesday, according to the Tuesday pandemic update by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The agency reported 1,830 active cases statewide on Tuesday, down from the 1,964 tabulated in Monday's report. Cases haven't been in the 2,000 range since the first of March.
A drop of almost a quarter also was reported Tuesday in Wood County where 22 cases were listed, down from 30 on Monday, the department said.
Current active cases in local counties as of Tuesday (previous day) were: Calhoun 2 (3), Doddridge 3 (7), Gilmer 2 (2), Jackson 8 (12), Pleasants 1 (2), Ritchie 15 (12), Roane 7 (9), Tyler 5 (11), Wetzel 4 (5) and Wirt 2 (3).
Eight more deaths were reported on Tuesday, raising the toll since the pandemic began more than two years ago to 6,903. Four deaths were from the data reconciliation with death certificates by the Bureau of Public Health.
The department Tuesday confirmed the deaths of a 64-year-old man from Berkeley County, a 58-year-old woman from Lincoln County, a 94-year-old woman from Marion County and a 91-year-old woman from Cabell County.
Reconciliation deaths were a 69-year-old man from Marion County, a 75-year-old woman from Mineral County, a 63-year-old man from Ohio County and a 78-year-old woman from Logan County. The deaths occurred in March and April.
"As we extend our sympathies to these families, we must do everything we can to stop the pandemic," said department Secretary Bill J. Crouch. "Please help contain the spread by getting vaccinated or boosted."
Statewide hospitalizations were at 133, 65 unvaccinated, on Tuesday. Twenty-one patients were in an intensive care unit, seven unvaccinated, and nine were on a ventilator, six unvaccinated.
One pediatric hospitalization was reported.
Twenty-two counties including Ritchie and Tyler counties are yellow on the County Alert System Map, second lowest level based on infection rates. Twenty-six counties were yellow on Monday.
All other counties are green, lowest level.
Fourteen staff and 18 inmates were reported as active cases, the Division of Corrections said. Three inmate cases are at the North Central Regional Jail.
