CHARLESTON -- Another four residents from Wood County have died from the COVID-19 coronavirus, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported Wednesday morning.
The state confirmed the deaths of an 86-year-old woman, a 65-year-old man, a 92-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man, the last victim found in the data reconciliation by the Bureau of Public Health with death certificates.
The death toll in Wood County since the start of the pandemic was at 334 people as of Wednesday morning.
Other residents from the region confirmed as deaths from the virus were a 68-year-old man from Tyler County and a 40-year-old man from Calhoun County, both added from the reconciliation. The reconciliation deaths occurred in January and February.
Forty-two more deaths have been confirmed since the last report on Tuesday. Other deaths were in Mercer, Taylor, Kanawha, Cabell, Monongalia, Berkeley, Greenbrier, Fayette, Ohio, Braxton, Wyoming, Raleigh, Preston, Monroe, Mineral, Summers, Harrison, Marion, Hancock, Pendleton, Mercer and Logan counties.
"COVID-19 has hurt far too many West Virginia families," DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Protect yourself and your loved ones by receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and booster shot."
Active cases continue to decline and were at 2,143 on Wednesday, another drop of more than 430 cases from Monday. The state reported 498 cases were received in the 24-hour period from Tuesday to Wednesday mornings.
Active cases have not been that low since July 2021.
Only five counties were yellow in the County Alert System Map, the rest were green, the lowest level based on infection rates on the map. Ritchie is one of the yellow counties, second lowest, and the others are Webster, Nicholas, Raleigh and Mingo counties.
Hospitalizations also are below 500. The state reported 481 patients in a hospital, 298 of those unvaccinated, 124 in an intensive care unit, 90 of those unvaccinated, and 64 on a ventilator, 52 of those unvaccinated. Ten pediatric cases were reported with two in an ICU and none on ventilators.
