Young at Heart ministry offering program on holiday treats

PARKERSBURG -- First United Methodist Church's Young at Heart senior ministry will offer a program called "A Taste of the Holidays" on Thursday, Nov. 20.
Seating will be limited to 50 people. Doors to the church's fellowship hall will open at 10:45 a.m., with the program beginning at 11:30 a.m. A free light luncheon of soup and salad will be served before three guest presenters demonstrate the making of holiday treats.
Each treat will be a dessert or an appetizer that fits the criteria of inexpensive, easy to make and requiring few ingredients. Guest presenters Kiki Angelos, Gwen Crum and Lisa Doyle-Parsons will demonstrate how they put together their treats. Afterward, attendees will be able to sample those treats.
Angelos has been a contributing columnist for the Parkersburg News & Sentinel for 15 years. Her column, "Kiki's Corner," often features recipes that blend in with a narrative on family life or experiences with friends. The former owner and operator of the Olympic Deli & Restaurant, Angelos will present a pistachio pudding.
Crum is the family and community development agent with West Virginia University Extension in Wood County. Her areas of focus are diabetes education, child development education and reading enrichment. Additionally, she works with various community groups across the county to teach relationship education and/or cooking classes. She also teaches food preservation classes. Crum will present oven-roasted wings (Greek and Buffalo style) and fruit tarts.
Doyle-Parsons is director of the Circles Campaign of the Mid-Ohio Valley. Her favorite motto in serving low-income families is, "If you can鈥檛 afford it, grow it!" Through community and container gardening, she helps teach ways to prepare and present foods. Doyle-Parsons will present holiday kabobs (savory) and a fruit tree with dip (sweet).
Reservations are required for this Young at Heart program no later than noon on Wednesday. They can be made by calling the church office at 304-428-0111 or emailing fumcjuliana@wvdsl.net. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday.
Although the program is cost-free, donations are appreciated. Checks can be mailed to First United Methodist Church, 1001 Juliana St., Parkersburg, WV 26101. Donations may also be brought on the day of the program.
