CHARLESTON -- Since Monday, 28 COVID deaths were reported by the West Virginia Department and Health and Human Resources in its Tuesday update.
As of Tuesday, the DHHR reported 8,604 active cases in the state and 5,288 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.
Through the Bureau for Public Health's data reconciliation, a 70-year-old man from Wood County was reported as a COVID death.
"The continued loss of more lives due to this pandemic weighs heavily on all of us, with the greatest sadness borne by family and friends," Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary said. "Please protect one another by getting vaccinated today."
Wood and Jackson Counties are in the red on the county alert system map with Wood County at 232 active cases and Jackson has 84. Wirt County is gold with 20 cases; Ritchie (23) and Doddridge (20) Counties are in the yellow, Roane (52) and Tyler (24) are in the orange and Pleasants (20) and Calhoun (25) are in the green.
According to the DHHR website, of the 257,181 cases since the start of the vaccines, 29,047 or 3.17 percent of those people were fully vaccinated and developed COVID. Since the start of the vaccines, 4,188 deaths have been reported with 433 breakthrough deaths, or 0.047 percent of whom who were fully vaccinated.
Free testing is available at Fruth Pharmacy in Mineral Wells, Walgreens on Dudley Avenue and Grand Central Avenue and Lincoln Facility on Murdoch Avenue Thursday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is also available at Vienna Baptist Church Wednesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3401 Grand Central Avenue in Vienna.
