Nucor Steel site closed Monday due to ‘written threat’

Work at a state-of-the-art steel mill in Mason County was temporarily halted Monday after the company became aware of a written threat, officials said.
The threat was directed at the jobsite in Apple Grtove on W.Va. 2 and referenced Monday, Katherine Miller, director of public affairs and corporate communications for Nucor, said.
"We immediately notified local law enforcement and the FBI and are cooperating fully with their investigation," she said.
The company closed the site for reasons of safety and an abundance of caution, she said. Local law enforcement and the FBI were notified.
"We have also engaged a private security firm and are increasing security at the site," Miller said. "We take any threat involving the safety of our team seriously and we will continue working closely with law enforcement.
No incidents were reported as of Monday afrternoon. The Mason County Sheriff's Department referred calls to the company.
Nucor Steel is located on a 1,700 acre tract on W.Va. 2. Construction of the sheet mill that will produce 3 million tons a year began in 2024.
Nucor had committed $4 billion for the plant. It is scheduled to reach full production by the end of 2027 or early 2028.
About 800 employees will work at the plant with another 2,800 involved in its construction.
