Ethel Channels Hill Casto will be 100 years old May 7. She was born in Reedy, W.Va., and later lived in Pee Wee and Elizabeth. She was married to Roy Hill and they had five children. Ronald (Helen) Hill, Melvin Hill (deceased), Darrell (Scheral) Hill, Teresa (the late Dale) Murray and Janet (George) Priselac.
Roy and Ethel were married for 39 years before his passing. Later, she married Gilbert Casto of Parkersburg and welcomed his five children as well. Patty (the late Ted) Johnson, Barbara (the late Terry) Nichols, Bob (deceased) (Gina) Hill, Rick (Veronica) Hill and Gib (Robin) Casto. Ethel and Gib were married for 25 years before Gib's passing.
Ethel has numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was a homemaker, but also worked at various local restaurants and was a Tupperware dealer. In her younger days, the hobbies she enjoyed were cooking, baking, raising big gardens and canning, sharing food with everyone, shopping, babysitting her grandchildren, and camping with Gib at Royal Oaks Resort. They were also members of the Good Sam's Club. She was active with Pisgah UM Church and Pisgah UM Women.
Her biggest passion is serving the Lord and telling people about Jesus. Her greatest desire is for everyone to come to know the Lord.
She is a member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church, but attends services at the Elizabeth Care Center, where she now resides, and can sometimes be found playing hymns on the piano in the dining hall.
Ethel credits her long life to good, clean living. When a person mention her age, she says "I can't hardly believe I'm this old."
The family will have a birthday celebration for Ethel at 2 p.m Saturday, May 6, at the Elizabeth Baptist Church at 424 Mulberry St. Elizabeth. Everyone is welcome. Cards are welcomed, but please omit gifts.
